Adult ASD Pathway

The Cardiff and Vale Integrated Autism Service (IAS)

If a person is working with secondary care MH services or has a learning disability then the pathway for autism assessment is through those services not the IAS.

The IAS accept referrals for autism assessment for people aged 17y 6m. All young people under that age need to be referred to children’s assessment services.

Pathway for adult ASD assessment:

  • Referral – self or by a professional, using the form available on the IAS website
  • There needs to be enough information indicative of autism for the referral to be accepted.
  • If the referral is accepted then information about the assessment process will be sent and the person is asked to contact the IAS to say that they wish to proceed.
  • Once they have opted in they will be sent a questionnaire to complete.
  • A Triage assessment will be offered once the completed questionnaire is received.
  • The triage appointment is usually two professionals who will ask further questions
  • From that, if appropriate, the person will be added to the waiting list for assessment.
  • If assessment is not considered necessary the person may be signposted to other organisations or services

There are time requirements for confirmation of opt-in and the return the questionnaire because
there is a high demand on the service. However, if a person is finding it hard to complete
questionnaire in the timeframe, this can be extended if they contact us.
