Barnardo’s Cymru

Charity number: 216250

Aims & Objectives

Barnardo’s Cymru has been working in Wales for over a century. Our aim is to reach out to the most disadvantaged children, young people, families and communities in Wales to help ensure that every child has the best possible start in life. We try to ensure that every young person can realise their full potential, whatever the circumstances of their life.

Barnardo’s works with children, young people and families living on the margins of society who are struggling to overcome the disadvantages caused by poverty, abuse and discrimination. We provided direct support to over 8,000 children, young people and families last year and less intensive support to an additional 16,000.

HEADROOM - First Episode Psychosis Service (FEPS)

Headroom is an integrated service delivered in partnership with Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. The Barnardo';s FEP Service supports children and
young people experiencing psychosis for the first time or those at risk of developing psychosis.

We support 14-25 year olds and take referrals from secondary mental health services where the young person has a care coordinator, e.g. CAMHS, CMHT’s, crisis teams or inpatient services.

We aim to offer help early so that children & young people can recover as quickly as possible. Research shows that the longer these difficulties are left untreated, the greater the impact on the young person’s life and the lives of those close to them.

We support the young person’s recovery through a mixture of befriending, advocacy and mentoring and by enabling access to mainstream and specialist services.
