Co-Creating Healthy Change

The Co-Creating Healthy Change project is a Lottery-funded project which aims to increase the involvement of people using mental health services so that services more closely fit the needs of the people who use them.

The project aims specifically to support the increased involvement of service users in the planning and running of three Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan – the Pendine Centre in Ely, the Hamadryad hospital in Butetown and the Amy Evans Centre in Barry.

What do CMHTs do?

CMHTs operate a secondary service and support people with severe and enduring mental health needs. In total, CMHTs currently support approximately 5,000 people across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Why get involved?

Through Co-Creating Healthy Change we want to:

  • build long-lasting links and positive relationships between service users and staff in the CMHTs
  • increase the skills and confidence of service users to have a voice in the planning and running of the CMHTs
  • give service users a feeling of greater influence on how services are run
  • give service users increased confidence in their daily lives.

What service users tell us

“I believe more service user involvement in CMHTs could greatly improve the provision and proficiency of these teams” (M, service user)
“I can only see a project of this kind as a potentially very important one, in terms of helping to create (and sustain) a 'culture of involvement’” (W, service user)

Ways to get involved

The project aims to encourage service users and CMHT staff to work together positively through provision of training and support, social activities and events.
